Carlos Manuel Oliveira

Choreographer and Researcher

Carlos Manuel Oliveira holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the New University of Lisbon, a Bachelor degree in Contemporary Dance and Choreography from the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT) and a Doctoral degree from the UT Austin|Portugal Program. His thesis subject was “Choreographic Objects: Abstractions, Transductions, Expressions”. He also attended, in Lisbon, both the Interdisciplinary and Technological Performance Arts Course at the Gulbenkian Foundation, and the Artistic Research and Scientific Creativity Course at the AND_Lab (Laboratory of Anthropology and Dance). He was Artistic Director of the New Circus of Ribatejo and Theatre Curator at INATEL (The Portuguese Institute of Leisure). He has worked with artists such as Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke, Wojtek Ziemilski, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins, Fernando Romão, João Fiadeiro, Bruno Pernadas and Urândia Aragão, and he has also presented his own artistic work in a variety of performance venues throughout Europe. He is currently Assistant Professor of Computational Media Arts at the Polytechnic Institute of Advanced Technologies, in Lisbon, and Associate Researcher at the HZT.
